Championing SMALL HOLDER Farmers to Access Government programs for Sustainable Agriculture

The journey towards sustainable agricultural development and community empowerment in rural Uganda has taken significant strides, particularly in 2023. Through deliberate efforts to raise awareness of government programs and strengthen access to government programs, local farmers are seeing their dreams of improved livelihoods becoming a reality.

One of the notable achievements this year was the successful lobbying of EL-THREE Agroecology Center farmer groups and Individual young farmers for inclusion in the Parish Development Model (PDM) scheme. This milestone is not just a win for the group but a proof of the power of organized advocacy and cooperation. The group is now set to receive 3 million Ugandan shillings to invest in agriculture, which will greatly contribute to food security, income generation, and environmental sustainability in their community.

In a parallel success, six farmers from the EL-THREE agroecology center have received 8 million Ugandan shillings under the Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP) for Chicken rearing—an enterprise with the potential to drastically uplift their income while providing a reliable source of protein to the community, while contributing to Uganda’s broader goal of greening the economy and building resilient livelihoods.

These Advocacy initiatives are more than just financial gains; they represent hope, progress, and the potential for lasting change. However, this progress would not be possible without the support and collaboration of stakeholders, development partners, and donors. As these farmers continue to thrive, they are proving that with the right tools, knowledge, and support, communities can overcome poverty, build sustainable livelihoods, and contribute to a greener, more prosperous future.
